Delaware names 2014 Reward, Recognition winners

Fifteen schools have won 2014 honors as state Reward and Recognition schools for their exceptional performance and/or closing of achievement gaps. Secretary Mark Murphy announced the winners of the awards, formerly called the state’s Academic Achievement Awards, today at celebratory events in each county. These awards, which carry a $50,000 prize for each school, were created by legislation spearheaded by Lt. Governor Matt Denn and passed by the Delaware General Assembly in 2009. CAESAR RODNEY SCIENCE TEACHER NAMED DELAWARE’S 2015 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Megan Szabo becomes Delaware’s nominee in national competition— Megan Szabo, a science teacher at Postlethwait Middle School in the Caesar Rodney School District, is Delaware’s 2015 State Teacher of the Year. Governor Jack Markell made the announcement tonight in front of about 475 invited guests at the Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center in Dover. Szabo, who began her teaching career in 2003, teaches a seventh and eighth grade loop at Postlethwait, where she also is team leader, head coach of the school’s Science Olympiad and advisor to the National Junior Honor Society. STATE TO NAME 2015 TEACHER OF THE YEAR FROM AMONG 20 NOMINEES

 Twenty Delaware teachers have been nominated for the honor of being named Delaware’s Teacher of the Year for 2015. Selected from among the 9,000 public school teachers in the state, the nominees each represent one of the state’s 19 school districts or charter schools. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at the annual awards banquet. The reception begins at 5 p.m. at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover. Delaware PTA encourages parents and teachers to attend these meeting and to provide public comment on your experiences and thoughts for improving the IEP process and outcomes. This public comment is typically 3 minutes for each person making a statement and takes place at the end of the meetings.
