Advocacy Skill of the Month: Policy, Not Politics in Elections

From our Friends at National PTA:
Election Day is an important opportunity for citizens to make their voice heard. As a public education advocate, it is important for you to stay in-the-know on the issues that impact you, your child and your community.
Dos:
-
Inform candidates running for office about issues important to you. Check out the Delaware PTA Election Guidelines on hosting candidate forums. These guidelines apply to all elections at all levels – whether it is the local school board elections or state elections.
-
Be an issue advocate. Share information with members about the importance of good public education opportunities for all children.
-
Vote! And encourage others to vote, too!
Don’ts:
-
Do not be partisan. Avoid linking statements about policies to political parties.
-
Do not advocate for or against a specific candidate for office. You can highlight the policies a candidate supports, but should not tell others to vote for or against a specific individual.
